A producer of nanophosphate, lithium-iron phosphate batteries and systems has announced an expansion of its grid storage equipment portfolio. A123 System’s GSS line now includes high rate and long-duration systems ranging from kilowatt-scale to hundreds of MWs, letting users deploy a system that meets their specific power and energy requirements.
The company says the modular architecture and flexible design of A123′s GSS increase performance and system efficiency to improve the grid while integrating renewable power sources. The company says the grid-ready GSS is capable of achieving greater than 90% ac-to-dc-to-ac roundtrip efficiency. Each GSS consists of a Grid Battery (GBS), Aeros software, and power conversion equipment.
The GBS is based on modular, rack combined, energy-storage units which serve as the building blocks for configurable high-rate and long-duration systems which meet application-specific requirements. GBS’s have onboard touch screen control panels, heat and smoke detection, and fire suppression. In addition to the standard containerized GBS, units are available in 20, 40, and 53-ft lengths. Rack-integrated battery systems can be used in buildings or custom enclosures.
The GSS includes A123′s Energy Response Operating System (AEROS) software for delivering control functions for integration with existing utility systems. Aeros increases efficiency by enabling automated control with built-in protocols, real-time reporting of systems performance, millisecond response times, and multiple operating modes to optimize customers’ application requirements. The GSS is also equipped with power inverters.
