Plasma cutter can pierce, sever thick metal

Benefits of the plasma include the optional auto-gas console and a single, quick disconnect torch for efficient consumable changeovers.

An 800-A system for cutting thick stainless steel and aluminum is on the market. The HyPerformance Plasma, released by plasma manufacturer Hypertherm, can pierce 3-in. (75mm) and sever 6.25-in. (160mm) thick metal. It can also cut thin metal—including gauge—without having to switch torches.

There is no need for pre-drilling with this plasma. Damage to the torch is minimized by using a liquid-cooled shield to repel molten metal during piercing and cutting. Tests showed no damage to consumables or a lower quality cut, even after piercing 3-in. (75mm) thick stainless steel 400 times.
