Ontario’s Niagara Region Wind Farm inaugurated as part of Global Wind Day

Boralex, ENERCON, and the Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation celebrated the inauguration of the Niagara Region Wind Farm (NRWF) on June 15th, which is Global Wind Day.

Niagara Region Wind Farm

The Niagara Region Wind Farm which is located in the Regional Municipality of Niagara in Ontario, consists of 77 ENERCON E‑101 wind turbines with a total installed capacity of 230 MW.

The wind farm, which is located on private land in the Regional Municipality of Niagara in Ontario, was commissioned on November 2, 2016, and consists of 77 ENERCON E‑101 wind turbines with a total installed capacity of 230 MW.

The project has a 20-year power purchase agreement with Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) and will power the equivalent of more than 76,000 homes per year throughout its operating life.

The inauguration was held in the presence of Michael Weidemann, Executive VP of ENERCON Canada, Matt Jamieson, President and CEO of the Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation, and Patrick Lemaire, President and Chief Executive Officer of Boralex.

At the ceremony, Lemaire praised the exceptional collaboration between Boralex, its partners, the local municipalities and their citizens: “This project was signed, built, and commissioned within two years as a result of outstanding teamwork, which fills me with pride.”

“The acquisition of the project, which we completed in January, represents the largest transaction in Boralex’s history and has enabled us to raise our contracted capacity target to 2,000 MW by 2020,” he added.

To mark the occasion, a public open house was held on the wind farm site, offering local residents in the region the opportunity to see the facilities up close, meet the project team, and learn more about wind energy.

“We are pleased to collaborate with partners who share the same vision of a bright and sustainable future for our coming generations.” said Matt Jamieson, President and CEO of the Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation. “The shift to green energy is an ambitious goal which we, and our partners Boralex and ENERCON, are excited to work together to achieve.”
