Two-phase cooling for warm things in the nacelle

Parker’s Precision-Cooled Rack Solution features patented two-phase evaporative cooling for things that must stay cool in turbine nacelles.
The flexibility of Parker’s technology and its use in racks, cabinets, and containers has been implemented in many other industrial markets where it has been easily configured to cool a variety of applications such as power electronics, motors, transformers, and batteries. Dual-phase liquid cooling continuously cycles a refrigerant within a sealed, closed loop to cool a wide range of devices. The cooling system uses a small pump to deliver just enough coolant to the evaporator – usually a series of one or more cold plates optimized to acquire the heat from the warm device. In so doing, the coolant begins to vaporize maintaining a cool uniform temperature on the surface of the device. The resulting two-phase coolant is then pumped to a heat exchanger where it rejects the heat to the ambient and condenses back into a liquid, completing the cycle.
The cooling rack works well in wind turbines where the size and weight in the nacelle continues to grow with total capacity. In addition, the Parker precision-cooled rack is the only product available today offering the potential to double the power density of key major subsystems such as the generator and power conversion system, and whose modular thermal management elements greatly simplify onsite maintenance when required, while reducing overall maintenance costs.

Free software finds tools for tube assembly tasks

Users make few selections before the free online software recommends a tool.
A recent web-based app makes it fast and easy to choose equipment necessary for a variety of standard tube assembly operations. Determining the appropriate equipment for an operation is easier with ToolSpec because it applies information supplied by users to find a suitable match.
Rather than simply listing tasks the tools perform, the application describes them in detail, as well as the function of the selected equipment. Users would first select an operation to be performed, such as pre-set, flange, bend, flare, cut, or deburr. Next, select the equipment on which the operation will be performed. ToolSpec then narrows the search with additional specs relative to the chosen equipment. After providing pertinent information, the app displays a final selection, showing appropriate tooling. The application also provides users with relevant equipment manuals and operation details. Use the free-to-use ToolSpec app at: www.tfdToolSpec.com.

The app is compatible with the iPhone and BlackBerry handsets. Versions for Android and Windows Mobile will be released soon.
A new mobile app allows users to search for hydraulic hoses and related information on the go. The application, HoseFinder from motion and control products manufacturer Parker Hannifin, features a selection process that enables the user to specify their preferred size, temperature, and pressure. The app then narrows down results to display suitable hoses. After the user identifies a product of interest, the Find It option locates the nearest Parker distributor by zip code. The Send It option is also available for forwarding the product details along with a message to a friend or colleague. The app also offers access to a catalog, which allows users to search for fitting, crimper, and accessories, as well as watch reference training videos and tutorials.

Aluminum tube fittings are 65% lighter than steel

SAE aluminum tube fittings are approximately 65% lighter than equivalent steel and stainless steel fittings. The lifhter fittings help save fuel, freight and shipping costs. The cost of converting a system from steel or stainless steel is also minimal, since no component redesign is necessay. The fittings are manufactured to SAE TFD Aluminum Fittingstured J514 dimensions for 37° flare fittings and SAE J1453 dimensions for O-ring face seal fittings.
The connectors are appropriate when weight reduction and/or corrosion resistance are essential. The maximum working pressure rating for the fittings is approximately 50% of steel fittings, while the temperature rating ranges from -40°F to 400°F depending on the seal material.
The fittings also feature a trapezoidal-shape seal, which prevents “pop out” associated with round-shape O-rings and further reduces the risk of seal damage and leakage. The manufacturer also offers robust port studs that keep threads unexposed between the locknut and backup washer, and so the potential for washer damage and leaks is eliminated.
