president obama wind state of the union“The first step in winning the future is encouraging American innovation…Already, we’re seeing the promise of renewable energy… Now, clean-energy breakthroughs will only translate into clean-energy jobs if businesses know there will be a market for what they’re selling. ” (President Barack Obama, State of the Union Address, January 25, 2011)

President Obama’s State of the Union address reminds us of an unavoidable and uncomfortable truth, says Kaplun. The US, despite being the leading innovator in the finance world (for better or worse) should re-examine its position as a technology innovator and its related infrastructure relative to other countries. Job creation begins with technological innovations. Innovation grows from a society that encourages the study of science. However, encouraging and supporting innovations in science, in general, and in the clean energy space, in particular, would ultimately fail without a strong and stable regulatory framework.
