Moventas has been testing their high-torque gearbox, the Exceed, and they can already shed some light on the promising results. The Exceed offers the highest torque-carrying capacity platform for high and medium-speed drivetrains in three-megawatt (MW) turbines and up. The platform approach enables adaptability, scalability, and cost efficiency.
As per the image shown here, testing has found that the space envelope of the Exceed (on the left) is significantly smaller than that of the conventional gearbox in this load test setup. Originally, Moventas promised 10% less size, but so far they seem to have exceeded their goal.
Moventas also has shown great results for load sharing with five planet wheels. Measured during the test run with strain gauges, this arrangement gives the Exceed gearbox even more power reserve than design values indicated. Additionally, the climate chamber tests have been concluded with results indicating that the Exceed cold starts 50% faster than what the industry standard suggests. In normal running circumstances, the Exceed operates on low-bearing temperatures, which helps prolong bearing and lubrication oil life.
In summary, the Exceed gearbox provides a competitive edge by lowering the levelized cost of energy (LCoE) of wind turbines with:
- 20% more torque density
- 10% smaller size
- 100% proven technology
Every design of the Exceed gearbox is validated by simulation and testing.
