Boulder Wind Power (BWP) today announced that Paulo Guedes-Pinto has joined the company as the Vice President of Engineering. Guedes-Pinto was most recently the Director of Engineering at FMC Technologies, a provider of advanced technology to the energy industry. In his new role, Guedes-Pinto will oversee BWP’s engineering team and will be responsible for the detailed design and commercialization of the company’s direct drive generator.

At FMC Guedes-Pinto led a team of more than 50 engineers and designers responsible for the development and detailed design of high speed, permanent-magnet motors and generators for land and subsea applications, variable-frequency drives and magnetic bearings. Guedes-Pinto also led all research and development activities related to new products, manufacturing processes and materials.

Guedes-Pinto holds six patents related to high speed and subsea permanent magnet motor technology and was the recipient of FMC’s 2011 Technology Award for the development and manufacturing of the largest subsea motor ever built – a 3.2 MW motor at 6,000 rpm that qualified for 5,000 psi service pressure. Guedes-Pinto has more than 32 years of experience in manufacturing, including 20 years of experience in engineering management, leading the design, development and manufacture of medium and large rotating electrical equipment.

Jim Smith, co-founder and former Vice President of Engineering at Boulder Wind Power, has assumed the role of Chief Science Officer. Jim will continue to lead the company’s technology development activities while providing technical leadership for expanding OEM partnerships with wind turbine manufacturers around the world. Prior to the founding the company, Smith’s experience spans the design, construction, test, and delivery of all varieties of nuclear propulsion plant equipment in submarines from the early Los Angeles and Ohio Class ships to the most recent Virginia Class, and the LSV2 experimental submarine electric drive system. He also led the development and installation of the largest integrated gas turbine and electric motor/variable frequency drive powered compressor trains in the liquefied natural gas industry.

“Having successfully designed, built and tested our advanced generator and power conversion technologies at scale our engineering organization has grown significantly to execute several critical programs to support customer prototypes,” said Smith. “Paulo’s technical leadership experience and successful track-record for engineering execution with similarly large rotating electrical equipment make him a perfect fit for this role.”

Guedes-Pinto added, “Boulder Wind Power has built a portfolio of innovative technologies, and proven them at full-scale. These advanced technologies will deliver tremendous value to the wind industry and I’m excited to join this world-class team of engineers and designers. The opportunity in front of BWP is huge and I look forward to working with industry leaders like Andy, Jim and Sandy, and the outstanding team they have assembled to deliver the next generation of technology solutions to the wind industry.”
