Successful wind-power development has a number of challenges that begin at the early planning and permitting stages. Effective project siting is a critical step in this process.
While met towers are a siting tool that have long been used to measure the wind resource ahead of planning a wind farm, the devices are not without challenges.
For example, met towers are extremely difficult to install, power, and maintain. What can make adoption even more difficult are a site’s environment and weather conditions. In the northern reaches of Finland, for instance, it can be dark for 20 hours a day in the winter and temperatures routinely reach minus 40 degrees Celsius.
To best meet such challenges, renewable energy developer Puhuri is using advanced remote-sensing technology to bring more clean energy and wind power to Finland. An ideal remote-sensing system lets wind developers reduce the uncertainty of wind resource assessments and enable a better, more efficient and effective project design.
Puhri is currently working with Vaisala, a global provider of environmental and industrial measurement, to do just that — overcome Finland’s tough wind siting challenges and bring wind energy to one of the coldest places on earth. Learn how Puhri and Vaisala are using advanced remote-sensing technology in this new video.
