Calibration lab certifies high-torque wrenches

By KRemington | August 12, 2010

A MobileCal technician checks a reading while calibrating a high-torque hydraulic wrench used on wind turbines.

MobileCal Inc., a provider of on-site calibration for high capacity torque wrenches, has been certified by The American Association for Laboratory Accreditation of Maryland by certificate number 3040.01. This shows that MobileCal’s system meets requirements of ISO17025 proficiency testing, and proves the validity of the service’s documentation and test results. The company says this accreditation has not been granted before, and will now let it certify the high-torque wrenches used  in the wind industry. This process delivers the industry a new level of quality and process documentation, which will improve process resulting in the prevention of large scale industrial accidents and other injuries.

The accreditation took the company about three years to complete mostly because there were no published standards for calibrating high-capacity hydraulic and pneumatic torque wrenches. A process has been established for decades for calibrating small-sized torque wrenches used in manufacturing and assembly such as those below 1,000 ft-lbs. The company’s target market is heavy industry because there are most tools larger in capacity. By adapting established procedures to the larger equipment, MobileCal says it brings a higher level of quality and process documentation to the industrial marketplace. Because of their work establishing the new procedures, MobileCal says it became the first accredited organization for mobile calibration of hydraulic and pneumatic wrenches.
