Coating approved for A490 bolts

By Paul Dvorak | January 2, 2013

Bolts

Test bolts are made of A490 and coated with Magni 565.

A coating developer says the specification of its Magni 565 coating has been approved for use on ASTM A490 high strength structural bolts. Magni’s 565 (ASTM F2833 Grade 1) zinc-rich base coat and aluminum organic-inorganic composition qualifies for A490s. Magni 565 is the only approved nonchrome, zinc-rich-inorganic coating approved to ASTM 490. Magni 565 passed all of the performance criteria tests (coating thickness, coating adhesion, paintability, rotational capacity, salt spray exposure, cyclic exposure tests), while, the most significant finding is the nil risk of internal hydrogen embrittlement (IHE) and environmental hydrogen embrittlement (EHE).

Magni 565 for A490 possesses the same distinct advantages that Magni has over other coatings. These advantages are exceptional corrosion resistance, cost-competitiveness, no hydrogen embrittlement concerns (IHE or EHE), consistent torque tension relationship, excellent adhesion, paintability, and RoHS, WEE, ELV and REACH compliance.
