Composite Advantage selects SCIGRIP’s SG230 HV for its FiberSPAN products

By Nic Sharpley | January 31, 2013

Composite Advantage, manufacturer of large structural composite products, recently designated SCIGRIP’s SG230 HV (High Viscosity) methacrylate adhesives as the structural adhesive for assembly of its FiberSPAN products – non-slip composite bridge decks used in multiple pedestrian and vehicle bridge projects.  Recent structures include a vehicle bridge in Washington, DC; a three-span pedestrian bridge that crosses over ten lanes of highway to Dulles Airport; a signature pedestrian bridge on the north bank of the Charles River near downtown Boston; as well as two pedestrian bridges that span railroad tracks and connect the Anacostia River Walk Trails in Washington, DC.  Composite Advantage required a strong, but lightweight adhesive that could provide permanent adhesion in harsh operating environments, while maintaining elasticity.  In addition to its proven strength, SCIGRIP’s SG230 HV was recommended for its ability to work with a selection of activators to provide users with working times from 30 to 120 minutes.

“The bridge at Wolf Trap National Park in Vienna, VA needed to be erected quickly at night with only 15 minutes of road closure per span,” says Scott Reeve, President at Composite Advantage.  “Lighter weight means faster installation and the SG230 HV bonding agent is lightweight, easy to apply in large structures having variable thickness bondlines and remarkably strong.”

SCIGRIP’s SG230 HV methacrylate adhesive is a two-component, 10:1 mix ratio product for bonding composite, and other plastic parts with minimal surface preparation. The adhesive is designed to work with a selection of activators. Typically used in marine, transportation and construction applications, and especially suited for bonding large structural parts requiring long working times and for filling deep irregular gaps up to 1.5 inches (39 mm), the SG230 HV adhesive is available in 490 ml cartridges; 5 and 50 gallon (19 and 189 liter) bulk containers for application with meter-mix dispense equipment.

“At SCIGRIP, we continually strive to find smart adhesive solutions to difficult bonding problems in collaboration with customers such as Composite Advantage,” says Karen Brock Amoah, Sales & Marketing Director for SCIGRIP. “The unique advantages of SG230 HV let Composite Advantage offer FiberSPAN as a cost effective method of creating pedestrian bridges, vehicle bridges and other large infrastructure products.”

Composite Advantage’s FiberSPAN provides an economical FRP composite solution that meets the performance and design requirements of pedestrian bridge applications.  Composite Advantage provides aesthetically pleasing decks that eliminate maintenance and can be fabricated in a range of strengths, stiffness properties, and creative shapes.  Composite Advantage decks incorporate design features such as curbs, drain scuppers. and expansion joints to minimize installation work.  The combination of lightweight and prefabricated structure accelerates on-site construction time.
