Monopile foundations are being built for water more than 40-m deep, where jacket and tripod foundation were thought best.
From a Research Note by Make Consulting
The number of bottom-fixed demonstration projects will increase significantly in 2017 and 2018. This Research Note examines some of the most promising bottom-fixed foundation designs that could complement conventional monopile and jacket foundations in the European offshore wind space in the years to come. Based on an assessment of benefits and challenges associated with the new concepts, the note highlights the prospects of some of these new designs being deployed in European waters. The report discusses:
- Developers have stretched the use of monopile foundations for European offshore wind farms in recent years
- By 2020, monopiles are expected to continue as the dominant type of offshore wind foundation
- As a large share of projects in the pipeline from 2021-2025 have a water over 40-m deep, the industry is seeking technology alternatives to complement monopiles
