Drone takes on inspection of offshore wind farm

By Michelle Froese | June 12, 2017

ESVAGT, a Denmark-based provider of services for offshore industries, has added drone inspections to its list of offerings.

Esvagt Vessel

The Esvagt Champion vessel assists with drone inspections of blades and towers at 80-turbine BARD Offshore wind farm.

Most recently, the Esvagt Champion vessel assisted with the drone inspection of blades and towers on 80 wind turbines comprising the BARD Offshore 1 wind farm, situated in the German North Sea. The inspection was conducted in coordination with AtSite A/S, specialists in inspection, analysis and database solutions for blades and main components for wind turbines.

According to ESVAGT, the drone inspection takes approximately 25 minutes per turbine. In comparison, an inspection with rope access takes between a half and a whole day per turbine and involves working at heights.

The company notes that using a vessel as a central base for the drone inspections helps the wind farm to be quickly, safely and more efficiently inspected.

“You save a great deal of time. This service is relevant for many,” says Mads Obling Rasmussen, CEO of AtSite A/S.
