EDF Energies Nouvelles recently announced the commissioning of four wind farms in the United States with an installed capacity totalling over 708 MW. The projects contribute to the EDF Group’s CAP 2030 strategy, which aims at doubling its renewable energy capacity by 2030.
The majority of EDF’s wind projects are linked to the commitments made by large multi-nationals to reduce their carbon footprint via renewables.
In December 2016 and January 2017, these projects entered service:
- Tyler Bluff wind farm (125.6 MW) in northern Texas
- Salt Fork wind farm (174 MW) in northern Texas,
- The Great Western wind farm (225 MW) in north-eastern Oklahoma,
- Kelly Creek wind farm (184 MW) in north-eastern Illinois.
Three of these projects are linked to the commitments made by large multi-nationals to reduce their carbon footprint, which represents a key sector driver in the U.S.
For example, the 96 MW of Tyler Bluff’s output is covered by an agreement with Procter & Gamble, which lets the company offset 100% of the electricity needed for all its North American based Fabric & Home Care plants. And the Great Western project’s output is contracted to Google Inc. to supply renewable electricity to a nearby data centre.
The Salt Fork wind farm, cloud computing company Salesforce, entered into a Power Purchase Agreement covering part of the power generated (24 MW).
In North America, EDF Group also accelerated its solar energy expansion drive in 2016 with a new 150-MWac project in the U.S.
