EnerSys marks 125 years in NA battery biz

The EnerSys battery farm is working at a Vermont facility. Since 2000, the firm has acquired 24 companies, which provide new products and services to thousands of customers around the globe.

Energy storage company EnerSys, has celebrated its 125-year anniversary in the industrial battery business in North America. From its beginning in 1888, EnerSys has evolved to become the largest industrial battery manufacturer in the world, operating manufacturing, assembly, and distribution facilities worldwide for customers in more than 100 countries while exceeding $2.3 billion in sales in 2012. The extensive line of motive power, reserve power, aerospace and defense and specialty batteries are complemented with a full range of integrated services and systems.

“The EnerSys family is proud of its rich heritage. From our humble beginnings in Philadelphia in 1888 to the International Space Station circling the Earth today, the company develops and manufactures highly regarded energy solutions for our global markets,” said John Craig, chairman, president and chief executive officer at EnerSys.

Today, the company says it continues to expand globally as strategic opportunities arise. Since 2000, the firm has acquired 24 companies, which provide new products and services to thousands of customers around the globe.

One recent acquisition, ABSL Power Solutions, provided a key component for the recent astronaut space walks and powered the Extravehicular Mobility Unit. The ABSL high energy density Lithium-Ion long life battery assemblies are used in the International Space Station for spacewalks. During the past two years, EnerSys, as part of its global strategy, has invested in battery businesses in India, South America, and South Africa.
