Fiberglass company gets GL approval for new reinforcements

By Paul Dvorak | December 13, 2012

Laminates from the company offer a higher level of fatigue performance, superior inter fiber and interlaminar shear strengths, a solution for designers developing the next generation of wind turbine blades.

Laminates from the company offer a higher level of fatigue performance, superior inter fiber and interlaminar shear strengths, a solution for designers developing the next generation of wind turbine blades.

3B-the fiberglass company has obtained Germanischer Lloyd (GL) approval for its recently developed SE2020 single-end rovings used mainly for manufacturing noncrimped fabrics in wind turbine blades.

“Noncrimped fabrics from SE2020 rovings are suitable for resin infusion or prepreg processes and benefit from 3B’s innovative and proprietory sizing technology focused on specific resin families, in this case epoxy,” says Luc Peters, 3B Wind Energy Technical Leader. The resultant laminates offers a higher level of fatigue performance, superior inter fiber and interlaminar shear strengths, a solution for designers developing the next generation of wind turbine blades.”

“Wind power generation is by far the most environmentally acceptable solution toward a sustainable and pollution free energy source to help meet our needs for decades to come. However, this will require multi-megawatt turbines with bigger blades placed in exposed locations ideal to deliver cost-effective electricity production,” said Onur Tokgoz, 3B Wind Energy Global Business Leader. “SE2020 roving is made from a boron-free E-CR glass for significantly improved corrosion resistance across a wide range of aggressive environments. Coupled with enhanced composite properties, it is well-matched for optimum performance in wind turbine blades particularly offshore where operating conditions are more extreme.”
