Free software for laminate analysis. See it at Composites 2011

By Paul Dvorak | January 24, 2011

A manufacturer of high performance composite fabrics is releasing the newest version of its laminate-analysis software, VectorLam Cirrus. The new version will be available February 2, 2011 at www.vectorply.com.

Although the example is for boat hulls, it could easily be for turbine blades. Each laminate report includes construction suggestions for major components such as strakes, stringers, and hull bottom-to-side intersection. Laminate reports are available in hard copy or electronic-file format.

The developer, Vectorply Corp., will unveil and demonstrate the software during the upcoming COMPOSITES 2011 Show in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, February 2 to 4 (Booth 1011).

“The recent version expands on its laminate-analysis capabilities while providing users with more useful tools for comparing and evaluating stiffness, strength, weight, and cost in composite parts,” says Director of Composites Engineering Trevor Gundberg.

Graphs such as Stiffness, EI compare laminates based on stiffness, strength, weight, and cost. This allows testing what-if scenarios with different laminate designs long before building begins.

VectorLam Cirrus has a metric-unit option on the Summary page, hull-side laminates on the DNV page, and more deflection-limit options on the Plate page. The navigation between laminates from the “Build a Laminate” screen is also a new feature.

Visit Vectorply’s website on February 2, 2011 and get a free VectorLam Cirrus download.
