GE signs wind-turbine agreement with Ukraine’s DTEK

By Michelle Froese | January 22, 2018

DTEK and GE Renewable Energy have signed a contract for the procurement, installation, and subsequent maintenance of 26 wind turbines. This equipment is intended for stage 1 of the 200-MW Primorskaya wind-power plant in the Zaporizhia Region. The project’s active phase will begin after the completion of all financial and legal aspects of the transaction. The first 26 wind turbines will be delivered to Ukraine and installed at the Primorskaya WEP in 2018.

GE 3-MW wind turbine

GE will provide 26, 3 MW-class turbines to the Ukraine project, which will be manufactured in Europe. Construction is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.

GE’s Onshore Wind business will provide 26 3MW-class turbines for the Primorskaya wind electric plant. These turbines, which will be manufactured in Europe, include some of the company’s most advanced technology developments and are able to adapt to wide variety of wind conditions. After the construction is complete, the Primorskaya WEP wind turbines will be among the most powerful in Ukraine.

The installation and subsequent maintenance of the wind turbines will be handled by GE in the Ukraine. The construction of the Primorskaya WEP is scheduled to be completed at the end of 2018.

“As part of its commitments to the European Energy Community, Ukraine has to increase the share of renewable energy generation in the national energy balance to 11% by 2020,” said DTEK CEO Maksym Timchenko. “The new wind park will strengthen Ukraine’s position on its way towards modernization of its energy sector, energy independence, and diversification of energy sources.”

The two stages of the Primorskaya WEP are scheduled to be commissioned before 2020. The plant will produce 650 to 700 million kWh of clean electric energy on a yearly basis. Resulting from the operation of the Primorskaya WEP, CO2emissions into the atmosphere will be reduced by 600 to 700 thousand tonnes annually, due to the decrease in the load of traditional generation facilities.

“GE Renewable Energy is pleased to work with DTEK, the largest Independent Power Producer and leader in the renewable energy sector in Ukraine, on this exciting project,” said Pete McCabe, President & CEO of GE’s Onshore Wind Business,. “Together, we will be able to provide affordable, reliable and clean energy to the residents and businesses of the Zaporizhia region.”
