The latest in a series of first wind turbine orders in countries such as Morocco and Pakistan, GE recently announced it will supply Vienna-based renewable energy developer RP Global with 12 GE 2.85-103 wind turbines for the Rudine wind farm—GE’s first wind farm in Croatia.
The 34-MW project will be co-developed with Croatian wind company Adria Wind Power, and will be located near the southern coastal city of Dubrovnik. It could produce more than 85 GWh of wind energy per year, says GE.
The wind farm—GE’s first with RP Global and Adria Wind Power—will contribute to the Croatian renewable energy production goal to provide 20% of the country’s final energy consumption by 2020, in concert with the European Union targets. The contract includes a 15-year operations and maintenance agreement. The Rudine wind turbines will also benefit from GE’s Germany-based remote monitoring and operations center, which monitors wind turbines in Europe and Asia all day, every day throughout the year.
“After the success of our wind power plant Danilo near Sibenik, RP Global continues to align experience with the latest technology, keeping the highest environmental standards and working close together with the local community,” says Bojan Reščec, RP Global’s country manager for Croatia.
After setting up the renewables incentive system in 2007 and joining the European Union in 2013, Croatia has added almost 300 MW of wind capacity. Additionally, and as part of its plan to achieve EU targets, Croatia has also set up a goal to maintain 35% of final electricity consumption coming from renewable energy sources through 2020.
“Croatia has focused targets for renewable energy and a plan to reach them, and GE is glad to help be a part of that,” says Cliff Harris, general manager for Europe for GE’s renewable energy business. “GE wind turbines are designed to operate well at the site conditions we see in Croatia, and our technology will enhance the economics of wind energy both for our customer and Croatian citizens.”
