GL Renewables Certification (GL RC) has published its new “Technical Note for the Certification of Wind Turbines for Tropical Cyclones.” The Technical Note is a supplement to GL RC’s Guidelines for the Certification of Wind Turbines and addresses the question how cyclones are influencing wind turbine designs.
An increasing number of onshore and offshore wind parks are proposed in cyclone-affected areas, mainly in the US, China, Korea and Japan. Properly designed wind parks should be able to withstand the cyclones that are likely to affect them within their lifetime.
Recent tropical cyclones such as typhoon Usagi, which hit the Honghaiwan Wind Farm in coastal Shanwei City, Guangdong, demonstrated the potential of extreme weather to impact upon wind park sites. The lack of clear guidance for categorizing the risk a site faces of being hit by a tropical cyclone and the extreme variability with which such storms effect wind farm structures, mean that developers are left with the uncertainty as to the fitness of their developments to deal with extreme weather conditions. With its new Technical Note, GL RC provides detailed information to wind turbine designers and manufacturers on this important issue.
The Technical Note can optionally be applied within the certification procedure and defines the additional design requirements to be considered for type and project certification as well as requirements for site assessment. It was prepared in cooperation with academia and industry and includes knowledge from research and from already existing wind parks.
