Hyosung Corp., the Korean power and industrial systems company and wind turbine manufacturer, recently installed the aeroMaster 5.0 offshore wind turbine prototype on Jeju-island, south of the Korean peninsula.
Developed by aerodyn Energiesysteme GmbH in Germany, the turbine, with a rotor diameter of 139m and a 5 MW power capacity, has a high-speed drivetrain with a medium voltage generator. The turbine was developed incorporating the aeroMaster drivetrain concept already used in designs for 1.5 and 2.5 MW onshore turbines. The aeroMaster 5.0 is the third 5 MW offshore wind turbine from aerodyn.
More than 10% of wind turbines installed around the globe originate from aerodyn. A second prototype of the 5 MW turbine will be installed during the course of this year by a Chinese manufacturer. A fourth offshore design from aerodyn with a 6 MW power capacity and an integrated drivetrain (SCD) will also go into operation this year.
