Kathie’s Question: Is the Keystone rejection a win for renewables?

By Kathie Zipp | January 19, 2012

oil pipelineIt’s big news today that Obama has rejected the proposed Keystone XL pipeline. Republicans are pissed, but environmentalists are literally throwing parties around the country celebrating the President’s commitment to clean energy.

The 1,700 mile underground oil pipeline would link the tar sands fields of northern Alberta to oil refineries on the Texas Gulf Coast. Republicans argued that the pipeline would have created jobs and helped the economy, but moving ahead with renewables also creates thousands of jobs, many safer than those of coal and oil. Supporters of the project also say it would increase domestic oil production. However, renewables can also help the nation become more self sufficient without posing a health risk to our water supplies as the pipeline may have.

Many accuse Obama’s reject of the project as a political move, and maybe it is. But I can think of worse politics than standing to support the expansion of renewables and the environment. I think we can see a lot more done for the renewable industry if Obama stays in office.

But what you do think?
