Kevin Alewine will co-present webcast on reparing gearboxes and generators

By Michelle DiFrangia | July 18, 2014

Kevin AlewineOn July 24 at 2pm EST, Kevin Alewine of Shermco Industries will participate as a co-presenter in a Windpower Engineering & Development webcast on repairing gearboxes and generators.

Entitled “Repairing Wind Turbine Components: Gearboxes and Generators,” the webcast will address generator failure modes and the latest innovations in remanufacturing. Wind-turbine-gearbox and generator failures are a challenge to the wind industry, but the engineers that design and refurbish them have a handle on the real causes of the failures and how to repair them. Research has focused on oil contamination, shock loads, and heat as a few of the problems. In this webinar, Shermco’s Alewine and Bruce Neumiller, CEO of Gearbox Express, will discuss failure modes and recent thinking on rebuilding a better gearbox and generator.

Alewine says he will discuss his “updated statistics for failures, what you can expect to fail, steps to assure less likelihood of failures, and the criticality of a preventative maintenance program.”

Kevin Alewine is currently the corporate director of marketing for Shermco Industries after serving for several years as its director of renewable energy services. Alewine has been involved with the wind generation industry for many years while focusing his 35 year career on the manufacture and repair of rotating machinery up to 15 kV. He was previously vice-president of business development for low voltage materials at a global manufacturer of electrical insulation and conductors. He assisted OEM and aftermarket clients to optimize the cost/performance value of their motor and generator designs through evaluation, testing and specification of electrical insulation materials, systems and manufacturing processes.  Alewine is active on several IEEE Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society testing standards working groups and is the publications chair for their 2015 Electrical Insulation Conference.  He is also the chair of the American Wind Energy Association O&M Working Group focused on the development of wind power plant maintenance recommended-practices and was the technical program chair for Windpower 2014 in Las Vegas.
