Materials Research Society & Cambridge U Press launch emerging materials science journal

By Paul Dvorak | December 3, 2015

MRS Advances, a peer-reviewed and online-only multidisciplinary journal devoted to publishing new and emerging materials science has been announced by the Materials Research Society (MRS) in partnership with Cambridge University Press.MRS materials

MRS Advances will reflect the way materials researchers work, write, publish, and share results. Drawing on the content slated for MRS Meetings, the journal’s editorial leadership will be selective to ensure only high-quality research is offered to the worldwide community. The journal will be a full-color publication with articles appearing in advance of issue compilation on Cambridge Journals Online (CJO) via FirstView publication.

MRS Advances will let MRS respond to author and reader demand for the latest results in materials research while adding a complementary title to the Society’s well-established publishing program. Authors will benefit from rapid peer review, speed of publication, and immediate global distribution on Cambridge’s proprietary CJO platform, alongside the MRS portfolio of other world-class publications, including MRS Bulletin, Journal of Materials Research, MRS Communications, and MRS Energy & Sustainability—A Review Journal. MRS Advances’ initial articles will begin to publish in December 2015 with its first issue scheduled for January 2016.

The Society President Oliver Kraft said, “I am pleased that MRS Advances is now a reality and am honored to help announce its launch. The goal is to develop MRS Advances into a premier journal for materials researchers around the world—where scientists aspire to publish their most exciting results and where readers expect to first learn about cutting-edge materials advances. Guided by an Editorial Board of prominent materials scientists, the journal will continue the MRS tradition of publishing the most up-to-date research for the materials community. We can all look forward to this exciting new endeavor.”

“To best serve the increasing global demand for emerging materials science, we are thrilled to launch MRS Advances which will enable us to offer this audience the very best selected content identified at MRS meetings. The MRS Advances launch reflects the ongoing successful partnership between Cambridge University Press and MRS in offering top-quality publications to the global materials science community” said Simon Ross, Deputy Managing Director, Academic Publishing at Cambridge University Press.
The Materials Research Society (MRS) is an international organization of almost 16,000 materials researchers from academia, industry and government, and a recognized leader in promoting the advancement of interdisciplinary materials research to improve the quality of life. MRS members are engaged and enthusiastic professionals hailing from physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics and engineering-the full spectrum of materials research.

Headquartered in Warrendale, Pennsylvania, MRS membership now spans over 80 countries, with approximately 48% of members residing outside the United States. In addition to its communications and publications portfolio, MRS organizes high-quality scientific meetings, attracting over 13,000 attendees annually and facilitating interactions among a wide range of experts from the cutting edge of the global materials community. MRS is also a recognized leader in education outreach and advocacy for scientific research.
