Maxwell celebrates American Wind Week

By Michelle Froese | August 6, 2018

Did you know that over 100,000 U.S. workers are employed by the wind industry? That 500 factories make wind parts? That the industry added 1,032 MW of new wind capacity in 2018?

This week, Maxwell Technologies celebrates American Wind Week, an annual event put on by the American Wind Energy Association to acknowledge the contributions of the wind industry and to celebrate the success of wind power in the United States.

Maxwell’s ultracapacitor (supercapacitor) energy storage is installed for emergency pitch control systems in over 67,000 wind turbines around the world. A wind turbine’s emergency pitch control system rotates the blades out of the wind for safe shutdown during a grid power loss or excessive wind speeds to protect the turbine from catastrophic damage. Electric pitch systems require energy storage to ensure the system pitches the blades successfully during those critical moments when the turbine must be brought to a standstill.

Learn more about Maxwell Technologies’ ultracapacitor energy storage here.
