NEC energy completes grid energy storage site for southern California

By Joshua Smalley | July 6, 2015

NEC Corporation and NEC Energy Solutions announced today that they have completed the installation of a 2.4 MW, 3.9 MWh grid energy storage site (GSS) in Orange, California for utility Southern California Edison (SCE). The system has successfully passed commissioning testing and is now available for full operation. This is the first energy storage system to support SCE’s distribution grid and is providing many of the foundational aspects for future integrated distribution system deployment. The energy storage devices will be used primarily to provide grid support via circuit loading relief.

“Energy storage can provide the flexibility that provides the grid reliability that SCE’s customers’ expect,” said Bud Collins, CEO of NEC Energy Solutions. “The system we’ve installed in SCE’s territory will help them keep the high quality electricity service that their customers desire. Energy storage is becoming an ever-more common part of today’s electric grid and our installation and commissioning process enables energy storage to be delivered just like any other piece of utility equipment. This latest installation was no exception.”

Installation and commissioning of the system took about seven weeks from delivery of the first energy storage equipment to the site, and was completed by NEC Energy’s grid storage integration team along with local contractors. The equipment was not housed in the standard shipping containers that have been the hallmark of most of NEC Energy’s GSS installations around the world, but instead installed inside a custom enclosure designed to fit the site.
