New ABB software offers unified view for efficient microgrid management

By Michelle Froese | February 12, 2019

ABB recently announced the global launch of its new ABB Ability e-mesh solution. This innovative software solution provides power grid operators an integrated single and unified view of their distributed energy resources (DERs) such as microgrids, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and renewable power generation.

Data collection, aggregation and storage in a secured cloud environment using an IoT edge device • e-mesh™ Applications forecasting, optimization, descriptive, diagnostics, predictive, and prescriptive analytics

ABB Ability e-mesh solution provides data collection, aggregation, and storage in a secured cloud environment using an IIoT edge device. Applications include forecasting, optimization, descriptive, diagnostics, predictive, and prescriptive analytics. Download more information here.

The widespread adoption of renewable energy is driven by global commitments to sustainability and is enabled by the reduced cost of key technologies, such as batteries, and provide power from a variety of energy sources. Analysis of data from these sources of distributed energy can provide insights for decision-making, such as knowing where to increase investments on maintenance or to better calculate the cost of new infrastructure.

ABB Ability e-mesh solution is a comprehensive cloud-based offering that enables utilities, industries, independent power producers and operators to make smarter, faster, and more effective business decisions by monitoring and controlling their sites and fleets remotely. It also enables in-depth data analytics and provides service options. The increased visibility across all assets enables better control, optimized investment cost and better operational efficiency.

“The ‘Industrial Internet of Things’ (IIoT) is becoming a reality with intelligent field equipment and connected devices producing data that can bring valuable insights, operational efficiency and cost savings,” said Massimo Danieli, head of ABB’s Grid Automation business within the company’s Power Grids division. “ABB Ability e-mesh integrates real-time monitoring, data aggregation and analysis, energy management systems, machine learning and predictive analytics, to accelerate the digitization journey and to further support the creation of a stronger, smarter and greener grid.”

ABB is a pioneer in microgrid technology and battery energy storage with over 100 such global installations, across a diverse range of applications serving remote communities, islands, utilities, and industrial campuses.
