New HighFlow Wind reinforcement fabrics launched for blade manufacturing

By Michelle Froese | July 11, 2018

HighFlow Wind Energy is the first product launch from Ahlstrom-Munksjö’s new platform, which includes a range of high-performance reinforcement fabrics. According to HighFlow, the material is designed to deliver unrivaled performance for lightweight composite materials.

Ahlstrom-Munksjö HighFlow aims to address the wind industry’s need for efficient resin infusion, complete fabric wet out, and minimal air voids when manufacturing turbine blades.

“We are very pleased to introduce Ahlstrom-Munksjö HighFlow to the wind energy industry,” said Pekka Helynranta, VP Building and Wind. “We now have the expertise to develop reinforcement fabrics with customized infusion speeds, without limitation of fabric construction or weight.”

The HighFlow Wind Energy product range consists of several unidirectional and biaxial reinforcement fabrics with various infusion speeds for wind-turbine blade manufacturing. They are currently available in E and High Modulus glass-fiber versions and will be available in carbon versions shortly.

“As blades are getting longer and laminates thicker, resin infusibility is becoming more critical,” said Helynranta. “HighFlow Wind Energy delivers unrivaled resin infusion that minimizes air voids and reduces total cost of ownership by up to 15%. We believe that this new fabric will become the product of choice as trend towards longer blades and thicker laminates further develops in this industry.”
