Offshore wind: Protecting marine mammals with noise reduction

By Nic Sharpley | September 13, 2013

Merkel logoI’m Nic Sharpley, managing editor of Windpower Engineering & Development magazine. Welcome to another edition of Wind Talk, our podcast series that gives you the opportunity to hear from the industry’s newsmakers in their own words.

Today, I’m here with Jens Kuhnert, product manager of Freudenberg Sealing Technologies Merkel, the global specialist for innovative hydraulic sealing systems in heavy industry. Merkel’s development, production and application expertise allow it to offer customers a comprehensive portfolio of sealing solutions. Merkel products are precisely adapted to the unique sealing needs and applications of its customers.

The company recently developed a special sealing system to reduce the underwater noise generated during foundation work for offshore facilities by 10 decibels as a target. This is a major development with the rise in interest for offshore wind, especially in the United States. Today, Jens will discuss the special sealing system, the current marine mammal threat, and what it means to the offshore wind industry.
