Photoblog: Windpower innovation on Martha’s Vineyard

By Steven Bushong | November 25, 2013

Siemens and Eastern Wind Power, a green energy design and development firm based in Cambridge, Mass., invited myself and several other reporters to The Vineyard to see a 50-kW vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT). Eastern Wind Power designed the turbine, while Siemens provided the inverter. The turbine's name is Sky Farm. Here, employees of Siemens and Eastern Wind Power stand with their production model.

Siemens Industry and Eastern Wind Power, a green energy design and development firm based in Cambridge, Mass., invited reporters to see their 50-kW vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT). Eastern Wind Power designed the turbine, named Sky Farm, while Siemens provided the inverter. Here, employees of Siemens and Eastern Wind Power stand with a production model. The turbine consists of three vertical blades, each 20 ft. long, and six horizontal struts — two supports per blade. Total swept area is 36 square meters.
