Radial shaft seals for large bearings

Reinforced all-rubber HSS radial shaft seals minimize contaminants and extend service life for large bearings in wind turbine drive trains, say their developers. SKF seals are for installation or uptower replacement during maintenance procedures. Minimal space requirements allow for smaller and lighter bearing housings, potentially reducing turbine weight.

The seals integrate Duratemp hydrogenated nitrile rubber, which provides high-static sealing while adjusting to flaws in the mating housing surface. A standard grade is used for the sealing lip, while the seal body touching the housing bore is made from a harder grade for improved stability during installation and operation.

The seals have a spring loaded sealing lip with a defined radial load. Available in solid and split versions, the seals can be equipped with an optional SKF Springcover to keep the spring in a correct position.

The seals are made slightly oversized relative to the housing bore diameter and depth, and they’re clamped in the housing bore by a cover plate. A variety of standard sizes can be specified and custom versions are available.
