RES secures US patent for turbine blade inspection technology

By WPED Staff | February 20, 2025

RES announced it has been granted a U.S. patent for a new method of inspecting wind turbine blades. It allows users to accurately view both the internal and external image of blade damage in a single platform for the first time.

RES

The technology, part of RES’ 3DX inspection system, uses drones, AI and robotics to provide a far more detailed assessment of blade damage. Blades are an extremely critical part of turbines, with extremely complex structures and properties. Until now critical maintenance decisions were only using half of the data – leading to increased maintenance costs and impactful downtime.

Developed by Swiss firm Sulzer Schmid, which RES acquired in 2024, the system helps wind farm operators identify issues early, reducing downtime and extending turbine lifespans. Wind turbine blades are among the most costly components to maintain, and this innovation aims to improve efficiency and cut long-term costs.

Alex Bamberger, VP, Digital Services and Engineered Product, at RES said: “As wind farms age, owners need reliable data coupled with advanced digital tools to make informed decisions on maintenance and lifespan extensions. Our newly patented technology provides a more detailed and efficient way to assess turbine blade damage, reducing risks and costs. This isn’t just about delivering better inspections — it’s about the future of asset management, turbine efficiency and optimized maintenance.  3DX delivers intelligence in a way like never before, unlocking new levels of productivity and cost savings.”

The patent further strengthens RES’ offering from its newly created digital solutions business which continues to develop new ways to optimize renewables, offering a suite of software and hardware solutions.
