SgurrEnergy completes key role for German offshore wind farm

By Michelle Froese | September 22, 2015

Butendiek

The Butendiek wind farm includes 80 Siemens wind turbines, which will provide power for approximately 370,000 households.

Renewable energy consultancy, SgurrEnergy, attended the official opening ceremony of the 288-MW Butendiek offshore wind farm in Husum in early September. SgurrEnergy, a Wood Group company, has been involved in the German offshore wind farm since 2011 and has completed construction monitoring services on behalf of the project lenders.

The Butendiek wind farm, located approximately 32-km west of the German island of Sylt, was developed by wpd AG and comprises of 80 Siemens wind turbines, which will be a source of renewable energy for approximately 370,000 households. The 288-MW offshore wind farm has had one of the fastest and smoothest construction periods of German offshore wind farm projects. With completion of construction works in under 18 months, the project represents a real success story for the German wind sector and increasing the market confidence in the region.

SgurrEnergy, a Glasgow-based consultancy contracted by the kfw IPEX-Bank, has been involved with the project since 2011, initially carrying out pre-financial close technical advisory services, through to construction monitoring activities on behalf of the project lenders. During the construction phase, SgurrEnergy’s scope included reporting to the project lenders on construction progress, programme and budget reviews, as well as on site monitoring of progress through visits to onshore and offshore construction sites.

SgurrEnergy’s Kevin Murphy, Project Manager, said: “We would like to congratulate all of the team at wpd AG on achieving this significant milestone. We’ve been involved in the project since the financing process began and it’s great to have been able to attend the official opening to see the project now operational, just four years later. The successful execution of this project is testament to the hard work of wpd AG and we look forward to working with them in the future.”

wpd AG’s Eckhard Stürtz, responsible for project financing and controlling of Butendiek, said: “The opening is a very important milestone for Butendiek which was achieved by the excellent performance and good cooperation of all partners involved. We are very grateful for the support by SgurrEnergy over the last four years.”
