Renewable energy consultancy, SgurrEnergy, is adding a new string to its bow with the launch of an onshore renewables Site Manager Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS). The course, which is CITB approved, is the first of its kind to be designed specifically for renewables professionals in the UK and will be delivered by SgurrEnergy’s health and safety experts across the UK.
It aims to inform site managers, agents and supervisors on the safe management of onshore renewable projects in accordance with current legal provisions. The course will support participants to develop their understanding of responsibilities and accountability, and promote the ability to recognise the characteristics of an efficient, economical and productive site.
At the end of the five day course, delegates will be able to implement all health, safety, welfare and environmental legislation, as well as new guidance and industry best practice. The program consists of the core SMSTS syllabus and is tailored to onshore renewables, covering content relevant to the whole lifecycle of renewable energy installations from pre-construction through to decommissioning.
The training will cover RenewableUK’s current health and safety guidelines, recently developed by SgurrEnergy, and group activities will focus on real life case studies from real situations and experiences, as well as wider industry projects. SgurrEnergy, a Wood Group company, has been accredited as a training provider by the CITB, the leading scheme by which the UK construction industry measures health and safety competence.
Implementation director, and joint founder of SgurrEnergy, Steve McDonald, said: “Health and safety is paramount to the renewable energy industry and to all of us at SgurrEnergy, with some specific risks to be conquered in these unique renewables environments.
SgurrEnergy is uniquely positioned to offer this training program due to its team of health and safety experts, long track record of renewable energy knowledge and experience, and commitment to the delivery of safe, successful projects. We look forward to kicking off this training service and sharing our expertise.”
Health and safety manager at SgurrEnergy, Paul Taylor, commented: “As the first of its kind in the industry, this course will deliver essential knowledge and skills to those who will be hands-on in the onshore renewable energy environment.
The role of the site manager is key to the success of a renewable energy project by providing the main link between project management and hands-on staff, so competency is vital. We are proud to be introducing this offering to the renewables sector.”
