Siemens recently signed a long-term agreement with MidAmerican Energy to provide service and maintenance for 958 SWT-2.3 turbines at 12 wind projects in Iowa. This represents the largest onshore service agreement to date for Siemens globally. Combined, these 12 wind projects have a capacity of more than 2.2 GW, enough to provide approximately 665,000 average Iowa homes with clean energy.
“MidAmerican Energy continues to invest significantly in expanding and sustaining Iowa’s position as one of America’s leading producers of clean, renewable energy,” says Randy Zwirn, president and CEO, Siemens Power Generation Services.
Under terms of the agreement, Siemens will provide approximately 10 years of service and maintenance for eight MidAmerican wind projects currently in operation, as well as four additional projects that are scheduled to become operational during the term of the agreement. Siemens service technicians and engineers will be working and living in and around these Iowa wind projects over the course of the agreement providing significant and sustained economic benefits to the region.
“Siemens continues to provide valuable equipment and services that benefit our customers and the state,” says Bill Fehrman, president and CEO, MidAmerican Energy. “This contract is a testament of their commitment to provide answers that help us continue to deliver sustainable energy solutions.”
MidAmerican Energy and Siemens have worked together since 2008 developing significant renewable energy resources in Iowa, benefitting local utility customers and residents. Additionally, Siemens has a wind turbine blade manufacturing plant in Ft. Madison, where blades for many of the projects were manufactured.
“I am pleased that MidAmerican Energy and Siemens continue to find opportunities to work together to enhance our state’s position as a national leader in wind generation,” says Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad. “It is great to see clean, renewable energy as the state of Iowa benefits from the quality jobs and positive economic impact that the renewable energy business generates and delivers.”
