SSAB and Hexicon agree to develop floating platforms for wind power

By Paul Dvorak | May 13, 2014

Floating tower designer Hexicon and steel manufacturer SSAB will optimize the steel in the foundation of the wind platforms to ensure a cost effective solution during their complete life cycle. “This agreement is an important milestone in further development of our patented solutions. Far offshore wind power is more easily scalable and a prime source of renewable energy. Hexicons technology offers competitive advantages for the long term renewable energy market”, says Henrik Baltscheffsky, CEO of Hexicon.

Hexicon's idea is to float several turbines on one structure.

The floating foundations supporting several wind turbines allows efficient wind park configuration in locations where winds are stronger and environmental impact is reduced. “The Hexicon patent is an application where our high strength structured steel WELDOX will come to excellent use. We look forward to contribute to further development of the technology, which enables much needed renewable energy to be produced with lowest possible environmental impact”, says Melker Jernberg, Head of SSAB EMEA.
