Suspended Access Systems get a Safety Boost

By Windpower Engineering | October 1, 2009

A new suspended access solution has been introduced to the windpower industry.  ThyssenKrupp Safway, Inc. has built a system that will safely enable complete external wind turbine access.  This system, the SafAscent Wind Turbine Platform, is used for turbine maintenance, repair, inspection, and cleaning.Turbine-Platform-2

Reaching new heights in access, SafAscent has a 6’6” modular platform with a steel wind cage stirrup that adds strength and stability.  Three sets of removable, padded roller systems protect the turbine tower and turbine blades from damage.  The platform’s 500-lb capacity adds efficiency with its ability to lift two workers and their tools.

The SafAscent kit includes the platform, hoist, and accessories to enable quick access to wind turbines.  The platform and kit contents exceed not only OSHA standards, but OH&S and ANSI standards as well.

Thanks for the comment, however, yes there is something new. The specialty of design and the rental factor offered are considerably new. Additionally, Tractel is the manufacturer of this equipment specifically for Safway. The originals worked so well, we improved on them and made them available for rental, rather than purchase. All equipment exceeds ANSI, OSHA requirements and is UL listed.

    Plus ca change!

There is nothing new about this – in 1988 at Wind Energy Group we purchased a suspended platform from Swingstage for just this purpose. Swingstage were a Canadian company who ( I believe ) are now part of Tractel.
