S97-2.1 MW becomes an IEC Class II machine

The S97 will work in higher average wind speeds thanks to modifications to the controller software and use of improved fiberglass materials in the blades.
Suzlon Group is announcing its S97–2.1 MW wind turbine has been upgraded to handle higher wind speeds in a 60 Hz version for applications in North America. Announced at WINDPOWER 2013, the new S97 is for sale now.
“The launch of the S97 has been very successful with nearly 400 MW in service in three countries,” said Duncan Koerbel CEO of Suzlon Wind Energy Corporation and Global CTO. “We are pleased to expand the S97’s footprint by adding Class II capabilities. Combined with our new S111, which is focused on the Class III wind sites, we have a very competitive 2.1 MW platform.”
The S97 will work in higher average wind speeds thanks to modifications to the controller software and use of enhanced blade fiberglass materials that further improve blade strength, durability, and stiffness. The S97 will be available for delivery in December 2013. Customers can expect a cut-in speed of 3.5 m/s, cut-out speed of 25 m/s, and rated wind speed of 12 m/s. It will be available in 60 Hz version for now, but considerations are being made by Suzlon to have it available in the 50 Hz markets as well.
