Test and repair for turbine electronics

By Kathie Zipp | September 21, 2010

DEX specializes in supply chain services, software solutions, parts procurement, and professional services.

As wind turbines come out of warranty, the need for repair or replacement of defective turbine components increases. DEX, a supply chain for high-tech industries, is one company that offers such services.

“The cost of repair is approximately 1/3 of buying new units,” says Duncan Kellet, external operations supervisor of Scottish Power Renewables, DEX’s biggest wind power client. “Now we have a contingency stock of repaired VRCC units at each wind farm so they can be instantly swapped out if there are any failures. This makes us less reliant on the OEM to have parts transported to site, which could cause potential disruption to our operations. A two to three day delay can be very costly in terms of downtime.”

The company’s electrical and mechanical engineers specialize in repair, upgrades, and product enhancements for wind turbines, and offer quick turnaround times, averaging seven to ten days.
