Two firms launch enhanced shearography service

By Paul Dvorak | May 22, 2011

The ruggedized Shearography NDT Q-800 unit is water and dust proof and intended for out-door usage in the harsh environments.

After successful field trials, Dantec Dynamics is releasing a new ruggedized shearography system for up-tower inspection. Shearography is an optical inspection technique to find sub-surface defects in material such as wind-turbine blades. In conjunction with Rope Partner, a specialist in rope access services in the wind-energy industry, the capability will enable detection of defects, including wrinkling, up-tower across large areas while keeping access cost to a minimum. Minor defects often lead to greater damage and can ultimately to blade failure, resulting in expensive replacement cost and lost production.

No surface preparation is required and inspection-coverage rates of more than 150 sq ft./hr are possible. “This collaboration offers state-of-the-art technology coupled with fast reaction times and low access costs, and it adds high value to inspections from the customer’s perspective,” said Dantec Dynamic’s Matt Crompton.
