UpWind Solutions launches FilterMag as part of the LifeXSeries

By Joshua Smalley | June 4, 2015

As part of the LifeXSeries, the FilterMag is designed to extend a wind-turbine asset’s life.

UpWind Solutions says FilterMag, a magnetic oil filtration device, extends a gearbox life.

As part of its LifeXSeries, UpWind Solutions has added FilterMag to its O&M services. FilterMag is a band of magnets that wraps around an oil filter to trap steel particles and thereby extend a gearbox life by reducing wear caused by ferrous particles. Removing such debris also improves reliability and lowers maintenance costs. The heat-resistant neodymium alloy magnets produce a magnet field inside a filter despite its thick canister walls, and remain effective in the most extreme environments.

UpWind Solutions reports that FilterMag:

  • Enhances particle capture–a 350% improvement in filtering ferrous particles from gearbox oil
  • Reduces contaminants that negatively affect the oil
  • Minimizes gearbox damage due to ferrous particles in the oil and ultimately reduce repair costs
  • Does not change the existing filtration system or planned maintenance procedures

To accompany the magnetic filtration, the FluxCon shielding is said to stop magnetic flux from emanating out of the FilterMag. The system also redirects a portion of the magnet power back into the filter to increase filtration efficiency.

Security end caps hold all parts of a FilterMag while allowing enough flexibility to fit a range of filter housing sizes.
