Engineers extract soil samples from Lake Erie in an effort to build six wind turbines off the coast of Cleveland.
The Lake Erie Energy Development Corporation (LEEDCo) recently announced that its POWER Pledge program to build local stakeholder support for the development of an offshore wind farm on Lake Erie had received more than 4,500 signatures from people living and working in Northeast Ohio.
In this Wind Talk podcast, LEEDCo President Dr. Lorry Wagner describes the POWER Pledge, as well as how and why the non-profit has gained public support. By signing the POWER Pledge, people are saying they are willing to pay a somewhat higher price for their electricity to receive some of it from offshore wind.
The potential source of power is LEEDCo’s “Icebreaker” demonstration project, which would consist of six, 3-MW wind turbines seven miles off the coast of Downtown Cleveland. Icebreaker will serve as the catalyst for a thriving offshore wind energy industry.
