David Holt, 12, stands by his test turbine at Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville, Iowa, one of the locations for the KidWind Challenge. He says windpower is a “good thing.”
KidWind is an organization dedicated to engaging students and teachers with the science behind renewable energy, especially windpower. “Our goal is to build toward a more sustainable future,” says Joe Rand, the organization’s training and outreach director, in this Wind Talk podcast.
Students are hearing about renewable energy on their own, and they want to know more. Teachers, meanwhile, are struggling to find ways to teach about it. That’s where KidWind helps. “We’re trying to design lesson plans and activities that are engaging and fun for students,” Rand says.
The organization also runs a multi-state competition called the KidWind Challenge, a student wind-turbine design competition. “At a competition in Buffalo, a student impressed the judges so much they offered him a summer internship,” Rand says, commenting on the impressive designs of students.
Listen to this Wind Talk podcast to learn more about KidWind – its educational resources, the competition, and the amazing talents of students – and how you, as a wind-energy professional, can help inspire the future of the windpower industry:
