Connecticut’s first commercial wind farm is complete and has officially come online. BNE Energy, a producer of green energy, has successfully begun operations at its Colebrook South facility. The 80 acres of land at the BNE Colebrook wind farm are well situated for wind generation at over 1,500 feet above sea level. Webster Bank is the primary lender for this project.
Two General Electric wind turbines at the Colebrook South site joined the Connecticut power grid in a ribbon-cutting ceremony last week. The milestone comes eight years after BNE acquired the Colebrook site to develop wind power in Connecticut.
“The future of our state and our country lies in the development of green energy and we are pleased to be playing our part,” said Gregory Zupkus, President and CEO of BNE. “The Colebrook South project is an important step toward maximizing the use of wind power on a commercial scale in Connecticut.”
The Colebrook South wind farm has a capacity of five megawatts and will power approximately 1,500 to 2,000 homes on average annually, or more than double the amount of electricity used in the entire Town of Colebrook each year. Colebrook South is approved for three turbines and BNE is already working hard to expand the project and add the third turbine to the site to maximize the amount of clean green energy that can be produced at the site.
“The opening of the Colebrook South wind farm is an important step forward for Connecticut. We have the capability to make wind power a leading source of energy in our state and this project will demonstrate wind power’s compatibility with Connecticut’s renewable energy,” said Paul Corey, Chairman of BNE Energy.
“Webster Bank is pleased to provide the financing for the Colebrook Wind Project and to be supporting renewable energy here in Connecticut,” said Carolyn Morrison, vice president, sponsor and specialty banking at Webster Bank. “We worked closely with the developers and the Connecticut Green Bank to achieve the successful completion of this project.”
