Black Island Wind Turbines announces first sales of the high-reliability HR3 wind turbine

By Nic Sharpley | May 16, 2013

Black Island Wind Turbines The U.S. Air Force purchased two 3-KW wind turbines for electrical supply at the remote operations facility Mt. Newall, Antarctica. The Air Force has decades of experience using the HR3, originally manufactured by Northern Power Systems, Inc. The HR-series wind turbines have an unmatched reputation for performance under the most demanding micro-grid conditions at installations in Antarctica, Alaska, and around the world.

The U.S. Antarctica Program Blue Ribbon Panel identified returning the HR3 wind turbine to serial production as necessary, as no suitable alternatives exist for renewable energy production in conditions that include -57 degrees C and 197 mph winds. The U.S. government operates micro-grids around the world, and requires reliable energy production.  As part of the reintroduction of this legendary turbine, Black Island has the HR3 scheduled for testing this summer by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory to verify it meets current small-turbine certification standards.
