Electric demand response turns fixed cost into revenue

By Steven Bushong | August 3, 2012

An earlier white paper from a monitoring systems manufacturer, Automation and the Smart Grid: Energy Management Today, introduced ways small and medium-sized commercial and industrial businesses can reduce energy costs, without waiting for the Smart Grid.

This more recent white paper from Opto 22 introduces demand response, a concept that goes beyond reducing energy costs. Demand response is having electricity customers reduce their consumption at critical times. Systems respond to explicit requests to turn off.

Within these grids and some U.S. regions — New England, mid-Atlantic, Florida, Texas, California — there are wholesale markets called Independent System Operators or Regional Transmission Organizations.

DR can transform electrical energy usage from fixed cost to a future source of revenue. And DR is a program that automation professionals can begin to improve their company’s bottom line, Opto 22 says.
