Optipact motion sensors measure velocity by calculating the rate at which markers on a moving surface travel across an optical sensor. With no contact between sensor and the moving surface, dust or surface contaminates will not cause problems.
The sensors provide an ideal way to determine rotor speed in wind turbines: Just measure the velocity with which part of the rotor (e.g. nose cone or shaft) moves past a point on the body of the turbine. The compact and durable motion sensors work well as primary or backup rotor speed regulation.
