Wind asset management firm opens parts and tooling center

By Kathie Zipp | May 31, 2011

Shorter lead times and lower costs in keeping with company strategy to deliver a higher standard of service and a lower cost per KWh.

A Medford, Oregon based wind asset management services firm will open the first UpWind Solutions Parts & Tooling Center in Kansas City. Following a comprehensive evaluation of several locations, UpWind chose the location because of the surrounding infrastructure and its proximity to 70% plus of the wind farms coming out of warranty over the next 3-5 years.

Peter Wells, Chief Operating Officer of UpWind Solutions says “We are making great progress on enhancing our Parts business for the Wind Energy sector. After extensive research, it became clear that Kansas City was the best location for our main distribution center due to the ability to quickly reach so many wind assets throughout the US, especially the Central and Western regions.”

The facility will house a wide range of spare parts for multiple Wind Turbine technologies, as well as an engineering center for parts, and critical components like gearboxes, generators, blades and transformers. Wells went on to say, “Our goal is to ensure we have the most commonly needed parts for multiple technologies in order to provide owners and operators with the type of service level they require, namely parts being available, with short lead times and a competitive price.”

The facility will feature modern inventory storage and management equipment, as well as advanced software. It combines temperature controlled areas for critical components, as well as an area for tooling and equipment used by the UpWind Solutions field technicians.

Commenting on the fit of the Parts business and the new Parts & Tooling Center with UpWind’s strategy, Marty Crotty CEO said, “Everything we do is focused on safety, quality, and operational performance, allowing us to provide a higher standard of service and a lower cost per KWh for our customers. Taking our Parts capability to the next level adds an important competency to our full product offering.”
