ZF earns DNV GL’s type & component certificate — a first for a gearbox manufacturer

By Michelle Froese | July 5, 2019

ZF’s SHIFT 4k gearbox platform offers an integrated design that aims to cover current and future wind-turbine requirements. Learn more here.

Global certification body, DNV GL, recently awarded ZF Wind Power’s SHIFT 4k gearbox platform for the wind industry with a “type and component certificate.” The highly scalable SHIFT platform is made for maximum flexibility, easy turbine upgrades, and extended product lifetime.

Previously, wind-turbine gearbox designs had to go through a long administration process of calculation files, validation results, and other tests. As of now, all SHIFT 4k designs are covered under DNV GL’s type and component certificate — ultimately saving costs for OEMs and turbine owners.

The new certification also means a shorter time to market. Gearbox installs or upgrades can be done quicker, leading to greater uptime and increased productivity.

With the new type and component certificate, ZF is committed to implementing the platform philosophy across its entire product line.

“Our goal is to obtain this certificate for our other SHIFT platforms as well,” said Mitja Schulz, Head of ZF Wind Power. “We are convinced that this will help our customers to make a faster ‘SHIFT’ toward the future.”
