The 130 ft wind turbine blade plug was machined and built by Bayview Edison. The company will build at least six sets of production tooling from this plug.
Bayview Composites, a composite tooling and fabrication company in Mt. Vernon, Washingon, focuses on wind energy, marine, aerospace, and other markets. The company makes wind turbine blade plugs, production molds, and accessory molds for the wind-energy industry. High precision tool paths are created in the company’s engineering department to drive its 5-Axis Poseidon milling machine (83 x 27 x 13 ft.) Applied metrology confirms the accuracy of the plug. The company can ship plugs at various stages of finish or complete “Turn Key” hinged mold sets fully commissioned in our facility prior to shipment. A nearby deep water port allows for shipment by land or sea.
As an example of company capability, its latest utility-scale wind-blade pattern has exceeded tolerance requirements as confirmed by a metrology scan of 47,000 data points. Tolerances for most of the wind-blade patterns are sub-millimeter. Of the 47,000 points, only 125 required minor manual polishing to meet blade specification. The company credits its 5-axis milling machine for the accuracy.
